There is a convoluted and an easy way to explain it, and it’s better to go with the latter. All you need to know about WN8 is that it’s a fan-made algorithm to determine your performance in the game. It’s very similar to the Personal Rating given to you in the game, but there are certain significant differences.
WoT players have a beef with official PR due to some indicators being detrimental towards the objective picture of the player’s skill and others being completely unknown. Meanwhile, WN8 is entirely transparent, was developed by the community members, and is open to criticism and modification, all in an attempt to create the most objective formula to calculate the player’s skill.
If you’re a casual player, WN8 shouldn’t worry you at all. But for the hardcore players, it provides several benefits. One is the ability to enter one of the top clans, since they pay significant attention to your WN8. And second, it gives the players a leaderboard to compare, set improvement goals and compete against each other.
But it is important to remember that WN8 is a fan-made formula, and it’s not perfect and shouldn’t be taken as the sole indicator of the player’s skill. For example, the algorithm heavily favors damage output and aggressive play. Meanwhile, players that prefer to hang and perform supportive roles will have smaller WN8.
As we already mentioned, WN8 greatly favors aggressive play from the players. So to increase it in the shortest time possible, it’s advised to have a tank with good damage, which can both deal lots of damage per shot and quickly destroy enemy vehicles. Good modules on your tank and a highly qualified crew with valuable perks are also essential to boost your performance during the match.
It’s also generally advisable to lead the offense. An aggressive player that attacks the enemy and constantly lands shots at their vehicles will receive a higher WN8 than a more defensive player that prefers to stay hidden and occasionally shoot at the enemies from far away.
But while being aggressive is important, it doesn’t mean you have to be reckless. Dying early in the match or contributing to the loss of your team won’t do any good for your WN8. So make sure to play one of the tanks you’re most proficient with and adequately estimate your situation — when it’s ok to take the risk and when you should step back and choose a different approach.
Generally speaking, the WN8 formula calculates the player’s damage, kills, spots, defense points, and win rate. But don’t worry. The formula is pretty complicated, and no one expects you to calculate it. To learn your WN8, you can use one of the WN8 calculators available online or download a mod, which will calculate and show you your WN8 right within the game itself!
The average WN8 of the WoT player is somewhere around 1000. At this skill level, players generally have a 50% win rate, meaning they’re not that bad to lose the majority of their matches, but neither good enough to win most of the time — pretty self-explanatory.
Sometimes, the player’s average WN8 can be low because, even though they recently started to play better, there was a long period of time before that when they were playing rather badly. But don’t stress about that. Many prefer to look at the person’s recent WN8 rather than their average.
It depends on who you ask. For a casual player, anything above 1000+ is good, and for more serious and competitive players, you’d need at least 1600+, with a preference towards 2000+. And if you’re looking to join the best players at the top clans, 2500+ would be the bare minimum, with 3000+ being more than welcome to join.
